Manual, in my car
Pass in a manual and you can drive anything, automatics included. Every lesson is two full hours, so there is time to get out of the estate and onto a real road.

How lessons work
Short lessons get eaten up by the same few streets. Two hours means we can get properly out on the road and work on the thing that actually needs work.

Already have your own automatic car? I can teach you in it, and it costs less than a lesson in mine. Automatic lessons in my car are something I plan to add later, so ask me and I will let you know.

Learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are welcome here. Any stage can be slowed right down, repeated as often as it takes, or split into shorter sessions. Tell me what helps you learn and we'll work that way.

About Steph
I'm Stephanie Borg, an approved driving instructor in Ipswich. I've spent the last two years teaching under a franchise, and when that agreement ends I'm carrying on under my own name instead. Same instructor, same car, fewer people in the middle.
The name
The Stef is me. The Jo is for my dad, who I lost recently. He is the reason I found the confidence to start something of my own, so it only felt right to have both our names above the door.
A calm car, honest feedback, and all the patience in the world. That's the whole promise.
Where I teach
Ipswich and the towns around it. Stowmarket and Hadleigh sit further out, so those are by arrangement.
Based in Ipswich. Stowmarket and Hadleigh are covered by arrangement.
First two hours are £60. Ring me, or send an enquiry and I'll come back with the times I have free.
Terms and conditions
Nothing surprising in here. It is just so we both know where we stand.
Lessons are provided by Stephanie Borg, trading as JoStef Driving, an approved driving instructor based in Ipswich. You can reach me on 07743 297142 or at jostefdrivinged@gmail.com.
Booking a lesson means you accept these terms.
Lessons are booked by phone, text, email or through the form on this site. A lesson is confirmed once I have replied and agreed the date and time with you.
Every lesson is two hours unless we have agreed something different beforehand.
The first lesson price applies once, to your first lesson with me. If prices change I will tell you before your next lesson, and any block you have already paid for stays at the price you paid.
Lessons are paid for at least three days before the lesson takes place. No payment means no booking, so the slot is not held for you until the money has come through.
Payment is by bank transfer, or in cash at an earlier lesson. Blocks of ten hours are paid for in full before the first lesson of the block.
If you need to cancel or move a lesson, please give me at least 48 hours notice and there is no charge. Less than 48 hours notice, or not turning up, may be charged at the full lesson price.
If something genuinely unavoidable happens, tell me as soon as you can and I will use my judgement. If I have to cancel a lesson, you will not be charged and we will rearrange it at no extra cost.
I will wait up to 15 minutes at the pick up point. After that the lesson is treated as a missed lesson. If you arrive late the lesson will still finish at the time it was booked to finish, so that the next pupil is not held up.
A block is ten hours of lessons, normally taken as five two hour lessons, to be used within six months of the date you paid. Blocks are for the person who bought them and cannot be passed on to somebody else.
If you decide to stop before the block is used up, I will refund the hours you have not used, charged at the standard lesson rate rather than the block rate.
If you send a friend my way, you get £5 off one of your lessons once they have paid for and booked their first lesson with me. The discount comes off a future lesson and is not paid out as cash. It applies once per person you refer.
If you would rather learn in your own automatic car, that is fine and it costs less than a lesson in mine. Your car needs to be taxed, have a valid MOT, be roadworthy, and be insured in a way that covers you learning in it with an instructor.
If your car is not safe or not properly covered, I will not be able to take the lesson out, and the lesson may still be charged.
You need a valid provisional or full UK driving licence to take a lesson, and you need to bring it with you. You also need to be able to meet the DVLA eyesight standard, with glasses or contact lenses if you use them.
If you cannot produce your licence, the lesson cannot go ahead and may still be charged.
Please do not turn up to a lesson under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription medication that affects your driving. Tell me about any medical condition or disability that could affect your driving, so I can plan lessons properly and so your cover is valid.
If I do not think you are fit to drive, I will end the lesson and it will be charged.
I may take control of the car at any point if I think it is needed. I can end a lesson early if behaviour is unsafe, abusive or puts either of us at risk, and that lesson will be charged.
You book and pay for your own theory and practical tests with the DVSA. If you would like to use my car for your practical test, please arrange it with me well in advance. Test day is charged as lesson time, and I will only take you to test when I believe you are ready.
If you have driven before and your test is coming up, we can spend the time on the test routes and I will assess where you actually are.
Even then, I ask for a minimum of ten to fifteen hours of lessons with me before I will take you to test in my car. That is so I have seen how you drive in different conditions and in different traffic, and so I am confident putting my car and my name behind you on the day.
I only use your name and contact details to arrange and run your lessons. I do not sell them or pass them to anyone else. If you would like your details removed from my records, email me and I will do it.
Pass photos only ever go on this site or on social media if you have said yes. If you change your mind later, tell me and I will take it down.
These terms may be updated from time to time. The version on this page is the one that applies to lessons booked from the date shown below.
